Background
Debate - Low Carbon Priorities for the Built Environment
This debate is designed to provide a platform to discuss the how the industry as a whole should start to plan and implement reduction in Carbon emmissions and the roles each sector of the industry will take.
The Architect – how to design for sustainable buildings and what is the impact of new technologies and new materials?
The Planning Authority – setting the right planning framework to minimise carbon emissions. Accounting for population growth and conservation needs. Communications and location decisions. Energy needs and supply. What can the energy industry offer in terms of renewable sources – local generation/supply versus remote generation?
The Constructor – the challenges associated with the use of sustainable materials both economically and practically. The need to combine durability with sustainability. About 10% of national energy consumption is used in the production and transport of construction products and materials. How can this be reduced through improved logistics and improved site practice?
