The Thames Gateway Initiative
The development of the Thames Gateway is critical in providing a template for eco regions and sustainable development in the future, and the Sustainable Environment Foundation intends to play a pivotal role in delivering this plan through the development of its ‘green paper’.
Government has stated that the Thames Gateway regeneration
“should be a showcase for environmental sustainability and an exemplar of international significance in the response to climate change. It will show how regeneration and development can not just co-exist but actively promote low carbon growth, increasingly sustainable use of water, increasing waste use not landfill disposal, and strengthened safeguards against flooding – almost entirely on brown-field land.”
The Sustainable Environment Foundation has developed a working group structure to develop this template. By working with the major stakeholders partners in the Thames Gateway initiative and thought leaders from a wide range of industries and disciplines over the last 8 months the “green paper” is now almost complete.
The ground-breaking initiative, coordinated by the Sustainable Environment Foundation will encourage greater cooperation across industry disciplines and more radical reform of the planning system. The Foundation plans to submit its wide-ranging’ green paper’ to Government in 2009 after having finalised its contents at the annual conference in April 2009.
